The
Vendee :
The
Vendee is steeped in sunshine and is one of the most popular areas in
France
. The
coastal area stretches down from
La Rochelle
past Rochefort to Royan with beautiful sandy beaches,
warm shallow waters, fragrant pine forests and traditional fishing
villages. Eighty-kilometres
of coast stretch between chic Les Sables-d'Olonne and the northernmost
tip of the scenic Ile de Noirmoutier.
Venture inland for fields of sunflowers and natural rural
villages.
Les
Sables d'Olonne is the main resort well known for its magnificent sandy
beach. The area between the
Vendee and Charent, the Marais Poitevin is a vast expanse of marshland
with approximately 1000 tree-lined canals and slow moving streams.
La Rochelle
port buzzes with a lively atmosphere.
The
island
of
Re
is popular for those seeking beaches and smaller,
quieter ports. The Ile de Re
is fringed by sandy beaches to the southwest and salt marshes and oyster
beds to the northeast. The
Ile de Noirmoutier was an early monastic settlement of the seventh
century and now serves as a relatively plush tourist resort.
Here salt marshes are still worked, spring potatoes sown and
fishes fished. You can find a
twelfth-century castle, a church with a Romanesque crypt, an amazing
market in place de la Republique and most of the islands nightlife
includes piano bars with longer than normal cafe hours. There are
numerous campsites dotted around the island.
Bikes can be rented.
La Rochelle
is the most attractive and natural seaside town in
France
. The
islands are great for young families with miles of safe sandy beaches and
shallow water. The month of
August is particularly busy in this area.
Out of season you can enjoy the romance of quiet misty seascapes
and working fishing ports.
Camping
in the Vendee is sure to captivate the family conscious outdoor
enthusiast. Book a campsite
