Camping in Provence

Camping in Provence is not going to disappoint the creative or artistically inspired.  It is a region clothed in magical light, fresh landscapes, olive groves, perfumed herbal vegetation, vineyards, and Roman and medieval antiquities.  Geographically it is varied from the snow-capped mountains of the southern Alps to the delta plains of the Camargue and the greatest European canyon, the Gorges du Verdon.  Charming villages perch defensively on hilltops with nestling green valleys and forests below.  Its great cities Aix-en-Provence and Avignon are abundant in cultural glories.  The arousing inducements of Provence include warmth, food and wine, rich and varied craftwork, museums and festivities.  Its no wonder this region captivated French Impressionists of the past and budding artists of the future.

Inland Provence remains remarkably unscathed.  The earliest known natives incorporate the Greeks, Romans, Saracens, dissident popes to different counts and princes, a heritage which has been preserved.  The Provencal language is only spoken by a small minority but the accent is certainly distinctive.  In the east the accents become clearly Italian.

With such a bountiful choice it might be difficult deciding where to go camping in Provence !  In the West along the Rhone valley are the Roman cities of Orange , Vaison-la-Romaine, Carpentras and Arles .  The papal city of Avignon has a fabulous summer festival.  Aix-en-Provence was home to Cezanne, whose subject matter consisted of the Mont Ste-Victoire.  Van Gogh’s links are with St-Remy and Arles .  Among some of the diverse and gorgeous landscapes are the Gorges du Verdon, the Parc National du Mercantour, Mont Ventoux and the flamingo filled lagoons of the Carmargue.

Decide which area you wish to visit and you won’t be disappointed with the choice in available campsites in Provence .
