The Ville Rose of Toulouse, so close to Spain and from which on a clear day you can see the Pyrenees, is a place to arouse the emotions. Wherever you are in the region, the Pyrenees make their presence felt. And wherever you go, you will encounter true wonders, whether of nature or man-made. A sense of strength and authenticity pervades. A different world to make for absolutely unforgettable holidays.
With the mountains as a backdrop,
the Pyrenean foothills have some
wonderfully preserved countryside.
Here and there you will see little
walled towns with their ancient crafts.
But they are also lively places where
you can eat in truly Gargantuan style.
This 'Land of Cocagne' in the heart of
the Midi Toulousain region is perfect
to organise excursions :
• In the Gers and its hillside fields of
sunflowers. The area in Gascony for
good eating, and its many festivals.
• The Ariège, with its mountain
scenery and castles haunted still
by the Cathar myth.
• And the Luchonnais, close to Spain,
famed for its many mountain summits
of over 3,000 metres and spas.
Martres-Tolosane the town of the
arts is a mediaeval walled city with a
double curtain wall unique for its type
(see photo). Its famous earthenware is
still made by hand using methods that
date back to the 18th century. Visits to
the workshops can be arranged.
St Bertrand-de-Comminges, the
'inland Mont-Saint-Michel' with at its
feet the fine Romanesque church of
Saint Just de Valcabrère, is the mecca
of historic art in the central Pyrénées.
Toulouse. The 'Ville Rose' permeated
with its rich Occitan past. Stroll
around its narrow streets or along the
banks of the Garonne. The city is now
a major aeronautical centre -the Cité
de l'Espace space museum and the
gigantic Airbus plant are well worth
the visit.
To the north of Toulouse, there are
the côtes du Frontonnais (about 50
miles away). This old vineyard is
home to the Négrette grape variety,
also cultivated in the Gaillac wine
region (75 miles away).
